A - Binnenstad Introduction

A - BINNENSTAD INTRODUCTION

The Jordaan is also located in this part of the city. It was originally a district for the poor and immigrants but today is the favourite place of students, artists and young professionals. This neighbourhood was built during the17th Century by the craftsmen; one of the most famous inhabitants of the Jordaan was Rembrandt. Nowadays the Jordaan is also a fashionable place to go out during the night, it has plenty of nice and welcoming terraces but some times it is really hard to find a free seat!

And let's talk some more about the red light district where you can find anything you might imagine, from sex shops or the famous coffee shops to sex museums and all kind of shops, everything you have heard is probably true. Locals know it as the Rossebuurt and to be honest this neighbourhood is not all about women in windows: the street and very charming houses here date back to the 14th Century are truly architectural jewels.

Also in Binnenstad, located on the Singel canal between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein, we find Amsterdam floating flower marke t, one of the most colourful places of interest in the city. The merchandise is exposed on stalls that stand on houseboats. Here you can find all kinds of flowers, from the classical tulips of different colours to Christmas trees in December. One cannot say that has been in Amsterdam until visiting this famous market. It is located right in front of the Munttoren, which in the ancient times was a part of the city wall. The market was inaugurated on 1862 and the fact of being a floating market is related to this as in those days the plants bought in this market used to be shipped from here to any place in the world.
