Amsterdam - Traditional Events and Attractions

Amsterdam has a busy agenda throughout the year as far as public events are concerned, so try not to miss them if you happen to be in the city when they are held. In January, providing the weather is cold enough to freeze the capital's waterways, a skating marathon called the "Eleven Cities' Journey" is organised in Friesland`s countryside. March is the month for spiritualism, especially among Catholics, as the Silent Procession walks along the Holy Way in commemoration of the Miracle of Amsterdam. This supernatural experience occurred in 1345, when a man that had received the Sacrament of the Sick threw up the Host and, once put in the fire, it floated above the flames.

The last day of April is "Queen's Day", and a whole celebration is held, with parties and markets on the streets, music bands performing outdoors and beer offered everywhere. May hosts both National Windmill Day and open garden days, while during June the Holland Festival, the largest arts event, is organised.

August's warm weather is the perfect setting for music orchestras and theatre groups to perform on the streets. Then, in September, you should check the colourful Flower Parade. After the Cannabis Cup, also held in this month to honour the famous herb, on December 6th the Dutch celebrate their traditional Christmas, Sinterklaas: however, when the rest of the world has its own Holy feast, on December 25th, they celebrate again.

For information on any of the events held in Amsterdam, from arts to concerts, at the AUB`s offices you will find brochures and free magazines announcing them, as well as tickets to attend them.
