in Amsterdam:
Amsterdam has
a wide range of cinemas to please all audiences: mainly classified in first run
cinemas with the usual program and Revival and art houses featuring more intellectual
movies, they are scattered along Holland's capital city so that you will always
find one near your lodging. Nevertheless, most of them are located in Leidseplein
and Rembrandtplein.
The "filmhuizens",
as the art houses are called in Amsterdam, are pretty famous among the local inhabitants:
at these cinemas, documentaries, retrospectives and art films from all over the
world are shown regularly, although you may come across a selection of Hollywood
blockbusters as well, at least the most intelligent ones.
The
variety doesn't end in the types of pictures playing, however. Before you enjoy
the film chosen, or even after it, at Amsterdam's cinemas you will find a diversity
of snacks to try: from the typical junk food to exotic home-made flavours, at
the Revival and art houses beautiful cafés become the ideal place to discuss
the scenes and review the movie with friends or family (the only cinema with no
café is the "Uitkijk"). At "The Movies", which is the
oldest cinema in the city dating back to 1912, you may even go farther and have
dinner at a charming restaurant: this offers a more sophisticated option to those
who find its art deco bar not enough.
If
you are planning to watch a popular movie, especially on an opening weekend, don't
hesitate to book in advance. And bear in mind that all productions are subtitled
in Dutch, with the original language -usually English- is left untouched. Films
spoken in Dutch show the indication "Nederlands Gesproken" right beside
the title, so that foreigner viewers are not caught off guard.
